Beneath the Fireflies
I lie beneath the fireflies,
And see the glitter in your eyes.
I turn and gently reach for you,
And find the space once filled by you.
I dust my trousers, walk back home,
One hand tucked in, and the other cold.
Still longing for your touch, I breathe in deep
But you were not someone I could keep.
I held too tightly to words that bruised,
And failed to see what you went through.
I questioned everything we came to be,
And missed the love you gave to me.
I could not make you understand,
I could not always hold your hand.
I could not voice what filled my mind,
And that's where I started to fall behind.
I could not soothe you as I drowned,
Or give you peace when I broke down.
I could not make you choose to stay,
When I was already far away.
And now, beneath the fireflies,
I search the dark for glittering eyes.
Perhaps your love was always vast,
And I understood it when it passed.
