Matters of the Heart
Matters of the heart stay hidden within,
Where no one may enter and no one has been.
There I sit silently, speaking no word,
Grasping her shadow, the one who saw my worth.
The sun may shine brightly outside my window,
But she shone far brighter than any star I know.
And every star needs room in the universe to glow;
I could protect neither her space nor her shadow.
I wake through the night and sleep through the light,
I eat when I can and with myself fight.
Caught in a cycle where I struggle to breathe,
I drift into distances where there’s nothing to see.
I hold my head high while my tears tumble down;
I close my eyes and can almost hear her around.
I dream of her presence through night and through day,
Though I know, in the end, she is somewhere far away.
Between us there lingers a chasm too deep;
I wish we’d had more of the moments we’d keep.
Then words would not matter, we’d simply discover
How to live as we are, and accept one another.
